Muse - Live - The Den, Teignmouth, UK - 5th September 2009

Muse Live on StageAs a curtain raiser for their new album 'The Resistance' Muse played two nights (4th and 5th September) in Teignmouth, Devon as a homecoming to the town where they grew up. With a stage right next to the pier and 10,000 fans on each night we were in for a special evening.

The support for both evenings came from local bands with Zane Lowe playing a DJ set to fill the gaps on Saturday. The quality of the support acts just goes to show that Teignmouth is quite capable of pulling another big act out of the bag and they all gave great performances. Unfortunately we missed The Quails on Friday night but I wanted to give them a mention as we met John from the band in the bar on Saturday.

Puppet Show Video ScreensThe stage itself was impressive as it carried the 'Seaside Rendezvous' theme for the night with the video screens surrounded by a 'Punch & Judy' puppet theatre.

About 9:25 Muse took to the stage. Announced by the Master of Ceremonies, they opened with the new single 'Uprising' which holds a lot of promise for the quality of the material on the new album. Muse continued to play the audience with a mix of new material and classics such as 'Supermassive Black Hole' and one of my all-time favourites 'Time Is Running Out'. They even covered the Gershon Kingsley track 'Popcorn' in reference to the Roller Disco that used to be situated along the seafront from where we were stood.

The sound quality was a little dodgy in places but then it always is in outside venues so I guess we will have to wait to see them again in November to get a true feel for the new material in a more 'controlled' environment but the sound didn't hamper a triumphant homecoming for the band as 10,000 fans punched the air and sang very loud indeed.

Muse LiveToo soon came the encores including 'Plug-in Baby' and 'Stockholm Syndrome' and, as ever, we felt that we could have stood and listened to them play for a few more hours. But Teignmouth is generally a sleep seaside town and it was time to bring the evening to one final crescendo as Muse closed with the epic 'Knights of Cydonia'.

Muse are touring their new material in the UK in October and November. If you have never seen them live then I would always recommend you try and get a ticket. Muse live is something to behold and it's one of those 'things to do before you die'. The new album 'The Resistance' is released later on this September.
